Set in China during the 1980's, Katherine is the story of
Zebra Wong, a young Chinese woman whose spirit had been crushed by the
brutality of the Cultural Revolution. When Katherine, a young
American woman, comes to China to teach English, her strange but
challenging Western views, her fiery red hair, and her exotic foreign
good looks begin to awaken a latent eroticism in the men and women she
meets. Zebra's heart begins to thaw like the spring after a long
winter of Maoist oppression. This leads to a doomed love triangle,
whose consequences are insidious and tragic, and a very moving
conclusion. Nancy Kwan's voice adds a strong sense of versimilitude
to the story, such that one has to remind oneself that she is reading
a work of fiction, and not her own autobiographical account.
