A legend of Hong Kong, The Magic Stone tells the Chinese
story of Mong Fu Sek, the "husband-watching rock". Wu Ying(Ling Yuae)
is an Chinese fisherman who is betrothed to a local village woman Mei
Ching(Nancy Kwan). Together, they discover the secret of the magnetic
compass, which allows Wu Ying to sail far beyond the horizon. Wu Ying
and Mei Ching marry and have a son. Wu Ying sets sail dangerously far
from home, and his junk is dashed against the rocks. Mei Ching each
day climbs a hill and watchs in sorrow for her husband who is never to
return, until at last the goddess Tin Hau has mercy on her,
and reunites their spirits. Produced on a small budget as a tourism
promotion for Hong Kong, this silent film nevertheless resonates as a
testament to the power of love and faithfulness to transcend death.
